Most of us could use some extra cash to help with holidays, or even just soften the blow of ever-increasing utility bills. There are lots of ways that you can supplement your income, and it doesn’t always have to involve getting a second job.
Here are a few suggestions that will help you give your wallet a nice cash injection:
1. Extra Hours or a Second Job
Let’s get the obvious one out of the way first. Working overtime is a good way to earn some extra money, especially if your employer pays extra if you work late or on weekends. A second job can be more tiring and time consuming (another commute, needing to change uniform, etc), but if you need to supplement your income long term, it can work.
2. Start a website
If you’re passionate about something, start a website, and sell advertising space on it, or join some affiliate programs. It will take a while to see returns, but you should be able to earn some spending money for the holiday season.
3. Sell your license plate
If you’re lucky enough to have a car with a liscence plate that spells something, you could be in for a nice windfall. There are a lot of websites that will help you to figure out the answer to the question “How much is my number plate worth?” Shorter number plates that are easily readable, such as “MAG1C” or “B1G BO55” are the most valuable, but even fairly normal number plates can fetch a surprising amount if they contain letters that represent a popular sporting team.
4. Make something
Are you good at cross stitch? Do you enjoy making jewellery? If so, why not turn those talents into a business and sell your creations on auction sites such as Etsy?
5. Become a coach
Coaching can be a lucrative career, and it’s a lot of fun too so it doesn’t have to feel like a second job. If you’re a successful business person, good at a sport, or just generally good at motivating people, then training as a coach; whether that’s life coach, weight loss coach, or a business mentor, could be a good route to earning some extra money.
6. Surveys and reviews
Survey sites, mystery shopping, and review websites can all offer a small source of extra income. These income sources aren’t intended to replace a day job, but if you have a few minutes each week to devote to them (perhaps while you’re on the train on the way to work), they could be useful as a source of vouchers to use for birthday gifts and treats.
7. Accept a boarder
If you have some extra space and own your home, or your agreement with your landlord permits it, consider taking in a boarder as a way to reduce your monthly rent cheque. Not only will this provide you with some regular, long term income, it could be the start of a lifelong friendship.
