10 Cool Ways to Save Money at College Every Day
Bike your way to school
If your school is not that far from where you are staying, you’re better off walking or using a bike. This will not only save you lots of money from fuel expenses, this will also help you get your exercise.
Buy in bulk
Avoid buying everything on retail purchases. Buy in bulk and stock your fridge with at least one week of the food you will need. Buying items in bulk will usually cost a lot cheaper than buying each item per piece.
Don’t have a fridge in your dorm room? Consider one of these mini fridges with freezer – that way you can freeze leftovers to eat later in the week.
Do not shop for food with an empty stomach
If you plan to go shopping or to buy some groceries, make sure that you eat before you leave. Going out on an empty stomach will only make you vulnerable to spending more than you should in a restaurant.
But, once you go out with a full stomach, it becomes easier for you to resist those sweet smelling temptations at the bakery store or restaurant.
Brew your own coffee
If you love drinking coffee, brew your own coffee at home. Buy different ingredients and make use of your creativity in brewing coffee with different flavors.
Simply having your own inexpensive coffee maker like this one can save you hundreds of dollars every single month.
Or get a Keurig coffee maker – more expensive going forward because you need K cups. If you want a Keurig, buy some of these refillable coffee pods.
Bring your own bottle of water
Buy your own water bottle. Then, fill it up with water from home before you leave and put this inside your bag. So, when you are thirsty, just grab that bottle from your bag.
Bottled water is very expensive – refill your own bottle and save some bucks.
Pack your own lunch and snacks
Cook your own food and prepare your own sandwich at home. Bring your own lunch with you every day; this will save you from being hungry and buying at the cafeteria.
Check out the internet for some easy to cook recipes so you will not consume much time preparing your lunch bag at home. Simple sandwiches and fruit are perfect for lunch.
Buy clothing at garage sales
Whenever you think about buying clothes, check out garage sales and other second-hand clothes shops. Certainly, you can find there plenty of clothes that still look like brand new but are sold for less than half of its original price.
Make use of your hobby and skills
If you love to play guitar, invite your friends to go busking. Make friends with café or bar owners and ask if you can have a short gig or sing a song for a fee.
Work as a tutor
If you are already in your junior or senior years in college, offer to tutor those freshmen or sophomores who are having difficulty in a certain subject. Or, you may also join peer-tutoring clubs where tutors will be paid at an hourly rate.
Recycle empty bottles and cans
Do not throw out your empty bottles and cans at home. Collect all these and then look for stores that accept items for recycling purposes. You will be surprised just how much money you will get back from your empty soda cans and beer cans.
(After all you paid the deposit, right? It is your money)
There are lots of ways to save money at college every day. Try to always be thinking of whether you can save a few dollars and how you can do it.
