Want to have a holiday but don’t want to travel far? It’s important to find some new budget-friendly ways to enjoy a family vacation. One such way is planning a family staycation.
Today I’m sharing some family staycation ideas that will help you plan a week-long family vacation in your local area. You don’t have to spend a ton of money nor travel far to enjoy some quality time together.
Family Staycation Ideas and Tips
What is a Staycation Holiday?
A staycation holiday is when a family chooses to plan a vacation at home. This vacation will include leisurely activities that are within driving distance of the family’s home.
A staycation holiday doesn’t require any overnight accommodations because you’ll be sleeping at home and enjoying activities close to home and at home during your week-long family staycation.
At Home Family Staycation Ideas
There are many family staycation ideas that you can enjoy during your week-long vacation at home.
Below are some of my favorite family staycation ideas to enjoy during this time away from the hustle and bustle of work and the real-world.
Be a Tourist in Your Town
Take a walk around your local community to do some sightseeing. You may have missed some of the historical locations, museums, and other places that tourists may enjoy.
Make a list of places you want to explore in your local community, dress up as tourists, and make a day of it.
Grab a list of hiking spots in your area, pack a picnic lunch and take the whole family out for the day.
Be Chefs for a Day
Another one of our many family staycation ideas includes being chefs for a day. Have each family member look up recipes that they want to try.
Consider assigning meals and snacks to each family member first so each is in charge of a specific mealtime.
Go shopping to get the ingredients and then plan a full day of cooking in the kitchen together.

Encourage a love of cooking and baking with your kids!
Have a Campout
If you have a decent-sized yard, you can easily have a campout in the backyard. If you don’t have a good backyard or live in an apartment with your family then schedule a campout in the living room.
Plan for one night of your staycation to be treated as if you’re away from home camping together and have a fun-filled night of sleeping in a camping tent indoors or outdoors with your family for your staycation.
If you have a fire pit, have a little bonfire and roast hot dogs for dinner, with Smores for dessert! Play charades or any of these fun summer backyard games.
Enjoy Board Games
One of your family staycation ideas can include a family board game night.
Get out all of your old family board games, and schedule a full night of playing games with special treats and drinks together as you enjoy a friendly board game competition together.
Be sure to check what board games you have stored, in case you need to order more before your family staycation begins.
When scheduling a family staycation it’s important that you first use my list of family staycation ideas to make a week-long itinerary for the family.
You’ll also want to schedule the dates for this staycation and treat it as you would a regular family vacation way from home.
Shut off all of your notifications for work and only pay attention to your family during this staycation. Use your laptop only for family games and watching movies on Amazon Prime.
It’s important that you work hard to treat this family staycation like a real vacation so that you all can rejuvenate and bond during this vacation at home.
